Building SaaS Products With Laravel for a Technology Venture

About the Client

ThanksIO is a technology holding company for SaaS startups, based in Denver, CO with 51-200 employees. The company builds and operates software products across the marketing technology space, with a focus on tools that bridge digital and physical marketing channels.

As the company's product portfolio expanded, ThanksIO needed a development partner with the Laravel expertise and product-building experience to bring multiple new SaaS products from concept to launch.

The Challenge

ThanksIO lacked the internal capacity for product development. With multiple SaaS concepts ready to build and no engineering team to execute, they needed an external partner who could take ownership of full product development — from architecture through delivery.

The products required thoughtful API design, clean abstraction layers, and user interfaces that non-technical users could navigate. Speed to market was critical, but so was building a codebase that could support future development without technical debt.

Two products needed to be built in parallel:

  1. Postcard API service. A platform for creating and sending digital print materials, including handwritten postcards, through a developer-friendly API.
  2. Print-on-demand plugin platform. A tool enabling small and medium businesses to create and sell custom printed products through an accessible interface.

The Solution

Active Logic built both products using Laravel over a 14-month engagement from May 2017 through July 2018. The team handled web development, UI/UX design, and backend architecture — delivering production-ready SaaS applications with proper API abstraction layers that enabled future development.

Laravel Expertise

Both products were built on Laravel, leveraging the framework's strengths for API development, queue management, and rapid application scaffolding. Clean architecture ensured long-term maintainability.

API-First Architecture

The postcard service was designed with proper API abstraction layers from day one, enabling third-party integrations and future product development without reworking core infrastructure.

Usable Interfaces

Active Logic designed interfaces that non-technical users could navigate confidently. The focus on usability meant small business owners could manage their print-on-demand operations without developer support.

The Outcome

Both products were successfully built with proper API abstraction layers enabling future development. The postcard API service gave ThanksIO a scalable platform for their handwritten postcard business, while the print-on-demand plugin opened a new market for small and medium businesses. Active Logic's understanding of the end goals meant they could recommend the best technical solutions rather than simply executing requirements.

"Because they understand the end goal... they can help us achieve it by considering the best solution."
